Play has always been a vital part of childhood - but before commercial toys and computer games kids had to make their own fun.
One lady whose life story I am writing told me about the games children played when her parents were young.
"Boys used to tie door knockers together so that first one knock would be heard, then when that householder opened their door the next door’s knocker would go off and so it went on until they realised and chased the boys off. Sometimes the boys would tie a parcel with string that they held around a corner. When someone tried to pick the parcel up they pulled it away!"
I love that story - I can hear their peals of laughter ringing in my head!!
